Mexico celebrates Cinco de Mayo for the courageous battle of 2,000 soldiers led by Texas-born General Ignacio Zaragoza against a French force of 6,000 led by Napoleon-nominated General Charles Laetrile de Lorencez. On May 5th,1862 the battle began at daybreak and lasted til the evening with the French retreating.  It would be a great boost to the morale of the Mexican people who would endure to fully oust the French with some help and support of the United States in 1867.

The United States has latched onto this day for celebrating the culture of Mexico in the US by elevating it with parades, parties and plenty of Tequila!
